After days of planning and contemplation, here you are, ready to give a new start to your yogic journey under the guidance of yoga erudite.

This would be your opportunity to learn as much as you can about this age-old science of life. After all, yoga is one healthy hobby that can transform your life!

But, is the thought of learning under the guidance of a teacher making you nervous with butterflies tickling inside your stomach?

Well, it’s quite obvious that you’ll have such feelings before you begin your class.

However, you can make it easier for you by keeping in mind certain things that a yoga teacher may expect out of you.

So, if you’re ready to start your yogic journey – keep these things in mind!

Maintain Hygiene

How would you feel when the entire class is in the downward dog pose and the person next to you smells so terribly that you are hardly able to hold your pose?

You have to understand that this sacred art is all about the good things in life and cleanliness or ‘Saucha’ is extremely important.

Apart from cleaning your mat on a daily basis, wear washed attire every day and avoid using strong deodorants or perfumes.

Let Go Off Your Cellphone

Remember that you are here to practice and learn about yoga. It requires focus, dedication and most importantly, love without distractions.

Put that cellphone in the locker and forget about your Instagram likes for a few hours. Immerse in the practice and your teacher will also admire your efforts.

Don’t laugh at mistakes

Though you may look up to your teacher or fellow students for guidance and knowledge but remember that they are also humans like you.

It may happen that while pulling off a certain pose he/she may falter at times. That shouldn’t make you laugh at their mistakes.

There is no end to learning and like you; they are also learning each and every day. So keep things in good spirit and focus on the positive.

Full Stomach is a No-No

Yoga is best not to be practiced in a full stomach. However, coming to class on an empty stomach is also not recommended.

Have some light snacks or breakfast (if you are coming to class in the morning) a few hours prior to your yoga class.

This way, you’ll feel energized and prepared while performing the poses during your yoga session.

Open Up about your Health Issues or Injuries

Before you begin your first session with your teacher, open up to him/her about any injuries you’ve had or if you are suffering from any health issues.

This will allow your teacher to know what’s best for you.

If you keep your health issues to yourself, you may hurt yourself more in the process which will ultimately hamper your progress.

Don’t Lose Heart

You are sincere towards your practice but despite that, you are not able to pull off a certain pose. Is there something wrong with you?

Absolutely not.  It’s just that yoga doesn’t happen in a day or two. It takes a lot of practice, consistency and time to master an asana.

Though, it may happen all the others except you are able to pull off that pose but there’s nothing to get disheartened.

Practice with compassion, love and patience – it will happen for sure.

It isn’t about how you perform in class, it’s about the feel

You may be able to ace the poses with grace and perfection and make others go ‘WOW’ at you. But after the end of the class what’s the feeling from inside?

Do you feel calmness, an improvement in energy and mood? If yes, then you are certainly on the right path. However, if you feel your ego getting bloated, this means you are chasing the wrong feeling.

At the end of the day, yoga’s purpose is to unify your body, mind and soul, and discover your ‘true’ self.

Be on Time

This is expected of you. Also, if you are 5 or 10 minutes early to class, it will help you settle down and relax your mind and body.

You can also warm up with a few stretching exercises before your yoga session begins.

Most importantly, it will show your effort and the eagerness to learn which will be much appreciated by your teacher as well as fellow yogis.

Be Aware of What You Wear

In this age of technology, people are used to seeing slim trim women in attractive yoga attires gaining thousands of likes on Instagram or Facebook.

But it doesn’t necessarily mean that you too have to be a part of it.

Of course you can wear your favorite yoga pant and top but make sure that you maintain your modesty.

Avoid revealing attires and also make sure that the clothes you wear are comfortable and don’t make you feel uncomfortable.

Think about the day’s class before going to bed

This is one of the most useful practices that will allow you to retain and remember what all you learned in the class.

Think of the poses you performed and whether any pose was hurting or making you feel great.

Also, keep note of what the teacher said and if possible scribble it down by the end of the class so that you get to revise it once you are back home.

In Conclusion
